Williams back in business with tons of runs in Senior Cup
A couple of years ago, Alywn Williams had to be pulled from a regional first-class game for Jamaica due to a medical problem.
Fast forward to the present, and the St Mary star batsman has taken the Jamaica Cricket Association’s Michael Holding Senior Cup by storm, smashing two double centuries in consecutive matches to announce himself as one of the tournament’s most in-form players.
Williams began his campaign in spectacular fashion, blasting an unbeaten 235 against G C Foster College in the opening round. Not content with just one monumental innings, he followed it up with 244 against Portland in week two.
To call his current form a purple patch would be an understatement, as the left hander has made it clear that he has been putting in the work to get back to his peak.
“It’s an amazing feeling to score back-to-back double-centuries. I’ve always wanted to score a double century, and to have done it so quickly, it’s a dream come true, said Williams.
His hunger for runs is fuelled by past medical struggles and he was quick to acknowledge that the support of those around him, has given him the drive to once again succeed at the highest level.
“I’m motivated by all the challenges I’ve faced over the past few years and by people around me that believe in me, so that gives me the extra push to excel.”
With such dominant form, Williams is now eyeing even greater heights as already he has a double-digit lead on top of the Senior Cup runs chart with only two rounds played.
“I’m hoping this form will boost my game even more, and I’m just being optimistic at this moment.”
With still two rounds of matches left in the West Indies Championships, Williams is also keen to don the national colours once again.
“It’s every cricketer’s dream to represent their country, so if I’m given the opportunity, I would be grateful,” Williams said.
