KINGSTON:

WIP Energy, a subsidiary of West Indies Petroleum Limited (WIP), will fuel the 41st Canoe Tournament, scheduled for October 21-25, as part of the broader 62nd Port Antonio International Marlin Fishing Tournament week.

The partnership continues WIP’s commitment to supporting Jamaica’s fishing heritage and tourism development in Portland. As a main sponsor, WIP Energy will provide fuel for approximately 60 vessels in the canoe competition.

“Beyond the friendly rivalry, these tournaments strengthen communities, celebrate our maritime traditions, and create opportunities for local fisherfolk,” said Wayne Fraser, General Manager at WIP Energy. “Supporting events like this also aligns with our mission to power the livelihoods of Jamaicans across the island.”

The canoe tournament, the longest-running local fishing competition in Jamaica, attracts approximately 180 fisherfolk from six parishes including St Thomas, Portland, St Mary, St Ann, St James and Trelawny. By hosting a tournament for the local fisherfolk, the organisers are also supporting the fishing communities, with many participants using the tournament as an opportunity to enhance their livelihoods through prize winnings and increased visibility for their fishing enterprises.

Noting that many of the fisherfolk were WIP Energy’s indirect customers, Fraser added, “WIP Energy is proud to partner on this event because it allows us to give back to the fishing community that has also supported our growth. We see their dedication and skill and this tournament celebrates their talent, while bringing together communities from across Jamaica, creating opportunities for economic advancement, and strengthening Port Antonio’s position as a premier fishing destination. We look forward to a great day on the water and good catches for all the participants.”

The canoe tournament will take place on Tuesday, October 21, with fishing beginning at 7 a.m. at ‘Di Ole Marina’ in Port Antonio.
