Mount Pleasant Football Academy has raised more than $400,000 in cash and donations for the club’s hurricane relief donation drive during Wednesday’s Concacaf Caribbean Cup semi-final fixture at the National Stadium.

Paul Christie, Mount Pleasant’s sporting director, sought to thank those who donated towards the initiative, which is geared towards helping those affected by the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

He said, through leveraging the power of sport and community, Mount Pleasant will be able to play a role in Jamaica’s recovery efforts.

“We are deeply moved by the generosity of our fans and partners,” Christie said. “Football is more than a game, it’s a force for unity and compassion.

“Mount Pleasant is proud to play its part in helping our fellow Jamaicans recover and rebuild. The outpouring of support shows the heart of our people and the strength of our football community.”

He continued, “We know we have a long way to go as a nation, in order to get anywhere close to a sense of normality. But, if we come together and support each other, we can rebuild quicker”

The club explained that the funds and resources raised during their donation drive will be used for several purposes.

Mount Pleasant will present a cash donation of $100,000 to the St Ann Chamber of Commerce to assist in the parish relief efforts.

The club will also make a separate cash donation to fellow Jamaica Premier League (JPL) club Treasure Beach FC.

Treasure Beach, the only JPL club based in Westmoreland, was left devastated by the hurricane which made landfall in the parish.

Mount Pleasant will also donate food items to the Mustard Seed Communities Jacob’s Ladder in St Ann.

Mustard Seed Communities is a non-profit organisation and their Jacob’s Ladder facility is home to more than 100 Jamaicans living with disabilities.

The club will also donate care packages to families across St Ann who have been impacted by the hurricane.

INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT

Mount Pleasant’s donation drive will also receive international support as they confirmed their partner club, R.A.E.C. Mons of Belgium, will host a fundraiser in support of Jamaica.

During their home match against Meux today, the Belgian club will have collector’s shirts signed by the entire Mons squad on sale, with the proceeds going directly to community rebuilding initiatives in Jamaica.
