National triple jumper Jordan Scott says he will be taking a much smarter and more-structured approach to his training this season as he targets another strong year on the international circuit.

Scott, who finished fifth in the men’s triple jump at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo last September with a personal best of 17.21 metres, said that last year’s breakthrough performances have given him greater control over his competition schedule and overall preparation. He also placed fifth at the World Indoor Championships earlier in the year.

“I am a little bit smarter in my approach to training. I think last year I wasn’t sure what the year would look like and we were kind of trying to figure out what the year would be like, so I was going into a lot of big meets just to compete,” said Scott.

“But I think last year we made a name for ourselves, which allowed us the opportunity to get into some of these meets a little easier. With that, it allows me to set a schedule for the year and stick to it and be good to go all year.”

“Approach-wise, we are not killing ourselves to be ready to go every meet because I can choose the meets that we really want and so we can be at our best,” Scott added.

The 2026 World Indoor Championships will be held in Poland from March 20–22, and according to Scott this event is his immediate target. He pointed out that he expects to open in mid-February as he fine-tunes preparations for the global indoor showdown.

“The plans for this year are to compete at the World Indoor Championships, the Commonwealth Games and also competing on the Diamond League circuit again. It is a little bit of an off-year one would say, but I still have big goals and big competitions to strive for,” said Scott.

“My preparations have been going good. I am supposed to open my season in mid-February and from there I hope to get everything sorted out at that one meet for the World Indoor and then go back to the drawing board and see if we can get going for the end of March,” he said.

“The immediate goal right now is the World Indoor for sure and just ensuring that we are doing everything in our power to be good to go by then.”

Scott, 28, has established himself among the world’s elite in the event, pointed out that his focus is not on chasing distances but on winning medals when it matters most.

“It (personal best) is definitely something I do think about, but not all that much. I think that we are in the position to jump far again, if not further, but I am just focusing on the World Indoor coming up and the main focus for me there is to medal,” he said.

“I am not worrying about distances because if they come, they come. As long as we achieve our goals by winning a gold at the different meets, then I will be good.”
