Young Reggae Girlz off the mark
Jamaica's Under-17 Reggae Girlz secured their first win of the Concacaf Women’s U-17 Group D World Cup qualifiers in Aruba on Tuesday, with a 2-0 win over the hosts at the Stadion Guillermo Prospero Trinidad.
Goals from Riquanna Richards (46th) and Elizabeth Miller (63rd) gave the Girlz three points to claim second spot in the group.
The young Girlz dominated possession in the first half and had some good efforts on goal. However, their best opportunity fell to Richards, who lobbed the goalkeeper but her effort fell wide of the mark.
The Jamaicans broke the deadlock a minute into the second half when Richards showed good control and composure before poking home from 12 yards.
Jamaica continued to have the better of the exchanges and Miller was on hand to stab home a loose ball that came off the bar in the 63rd, to make it 2-0.
Despite a valiant effort from the hosts, the young Reggae Girlz saw out the game comfortably and moved to four points, two behind leaders Honduras, who hammered St Vincent 15-0.
Jamaica will play St Vincent in their next game on Thursday.
