Immaculate, KC lead the way

IMMACULATE Conception High and defending champions Kingston College were the early leaders on day one of the Corporate Area Track and Field Championships at Ashenheim Stadium, Jamaica College (JC), yesterday.
Immaculate, with 165 points, lead the girls’ section ahead of defending champions Excelsior High in second on 111. Wolmer’s Girls 102.5, Convent of Mercy, Alpha 101.33, and Merl Grove High, 61, close out the top five.
Defending champions Kingston College (KC) head the boys’ standings with 139 followed by JC 126, Calabar High 71, Excelsior 43 and Wolmer’s Boys 43.
There were two meet records on the track and one in the field, while several athletes produced personal best results in other finals completed.
The first record came in the first final of the day, the Class Three girls’ 1500m as Alpha’s Danoy Scott romped to a new personal best 4:57.96 to win the event. There were also personal best times for second-place finisher Keona James of Merl Grove (5:16.87) and third-place finisher Gabrielle Wellington of Campion, 5:27.26.
The other meet record came in the Class Three boys’ 1500m as KC’s Kenya-born Julius Itubo sped to a personal best 4:05.51. Ricardo Lee of JC was second in 4:10.98, while his teammate Mickoloy Saunders was third in a personal best 4:33.80.
Immaculate’s Zoelle Jamel produced the lone field event record on the day after winning the javelin open with a distance of 42.09m. Tamara Austin of Excelsior was second with 35.47m and Decia McDonald of Immaculate third with 32.76m.
In other completed finals Kayah Kinon-Anderson of The Queen’s School won the Class Two 1500m in a personal best 5:07.00 while Ashanti Parkes captured the Class One 1500m in a personal best 5:21.83.
One-two finish
JC had a one-two finish in the boys’ Class Two 1500, where Cavel Nooks won in a personal best 4:27.68 ahead of teammate Bevin Daley, second in 4:27.73 and Cameron Brown of Campion, third in 4:21.43.
KC’s Nahashon Ruto clocked a season’s best 4:03.44 to win the Class One 1500m, ahead of JC’s Rasheed Pryce, second in a personal best 4:08.20, with Amari Brightly of Campion, third in 4:11.61.
Jaedan Robinson of Immaculate captured the Class Three girls’ long jump with a distance of 5.58m, ahead of Tatanya Anglin of Merl Grove, second with 5.45m, and Janelle Lowe of Wolmer’s, third with 5.48m. Tahira Anthony captured the girls’ Class Four high jump with a personal best 1.59m.
KC’s Omarion Miller won the Class One long jump with 7.30m, ahead of teammate Amani Phillips, 6.95m.
In the javelin open, KC took the first two places. Joel Clement won with a season’s best 55.41m. Kimari Smith was second with 47.62m.
Action will begin this morning at 8:30 with the Class One boys’ discus, while the first track event will get under way at noon with the final of the 400m hurdles open for girls.
