Athletes competing at the three-day Carifta Trials, which started on Friday, are doing so without having to think about paying the usual entry fee of $500 per athlete, as the Jamaica Administrative Athletics Association (JAAA) has waived the fees for all participants.
Garth Gayle, president of the JAAA, yesterday gave the reason behind the move.
“Hurricane Melissa has wreaked havoc among the schools across the island, especially the western end of the island. And, as a caring body, we decided to assist the respective schools and their athletes, as it has been a challenge to all parties,” said Gayle.
“We will also be extending this gesture to athletes competing at the National Junior Championships in June,” shared Gayle.
Gayle also thanked PUMA for its sponsorship.
“Our association would like to thank PUMA, as their sponsorship went a far way in helping this cause,” he continued.
Finally, Gayle gave the reason why the JAAA had entry fees for athletes competing at Trials in the first place..
“We had to put in a cost for entry as athletes, after entering, fail to show for their events, robbing the paying fans of action, which is a bit unfair,” said Gayle.
