Grant backs Titchfield to produce good Champs results

After Titchfield High School dominated the male section of the Eastern Athletics Championships to amass 367 points to beat nearest rivals Oberlin by over 150 points, head coach Kerron Grant is hoping to take that momentum into the Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs), which is less than two weeks away.

Grant, who is in charge of both the male and female teams at the institution, is hoping the former, which finished 15th overall at the last Champs with 22 points, will show improvement. He is also hoping for better results from the girls, who failed to score a single point.

“This year we will be carrying a smaller team to the championships and we are definitely looking for a big improvement, especially among the boys, who are highly motivated. We definitely want to score more points, and we are also hoping that the girls can pick up some points, too,” said Grant, whose female team finished third at the Eastern Athletics Championships.

Asked how difficult it is to work with both programmes, his response was: “In the past, I used to work with the boys by themselves, and the same with the girls. And working with both teams together now is not that difficult, as working with each separately has given me the experience, as there is different motivation for each,” he said.

Grant also spoke about the strength of his male team.

“We have a few champions, especially in the jumps from the Eastern Athletics Championships, who are young and motivated, and we have a good team in the middle distance, especially in the 800 metres. To add to that, we have some quality in the sprints, and those are the areas we expect to get most of our points from,” said Grant.

Grant is also asking fans to come out and support both teams at Champs.

“Well, it is Titchfield, which is always competitive, and with coach Grant at the helm you are always going to get good results.”
