Court rules in favour of PFJL - Injunction to halt JPL broadcast denied

Professional Football Jamaica Limited (PFJL) has won the first round of a legal battle with PIVOTT after the Supreme Court denied an injunction application filed by PIVOTT LLC seeking to prevent PFJL from producing and broadcasting the Jamaica Premier League (JPL).
PIVOTT LLC was announced as the official broadcast partner for the JPL last year, but the relationship subsequently soured into legal action.
PIVOTT filed the application for the injunction in the wake of a lawsuit claiming over $100 million dollars, citing breach of contract and NDA violations.
In its ruling, the Supreme Court also ordered that costs be paid to PFJL and further denied an oral application by PIVOTT LLC’s attorneys for leave to appeal the decision, effectively bringing that aspect of the matter to a close.
PFJL’s legal team, led by Attorney-at-Law Emile Leiba, successfully defended the injunction proceedings over the course of hearings, which began on Thursday and ended today.
PIVOTT’s original lawsuit continues, however, and the PFJL says its attorneys are now preparing and filing a defence to the substantive claim and seeking to have the claim entirely struck out.
PFJL Interim Chairman Donovan White said the organisation welcomes the ruling:
“We are happy that justice has prevailed and that the cCourt saw this matter for what it was and ruled accordingly. This matter has caused the PFJL and the JPL considerable pain with our partners and stakeholders, and we are, therefore, pleased to put this aspect behind us and pivot to the successful start of the JPL Playoffs.”
The interim PFJL boss noted that the organisation remains fully committed to the continued growth, promotion, and professional execution of the JPL as the country’s premier football competition.
The JPL playoffs will begin tomorrow at the National Stadium.
