MVP Track Club has confirmed that Stephen ‘Franno’ Francis, its co-founder and technical director, is ill.

Speculation has been rife in recent weeks that the legendary coach is battling a serious illness.

In a statement this morning, Club President Bruce James revealed that Francis is “currently receiving medical care in hospital”.

The University of Technology-based club is home to scores of elite athletes, including Shericka Jackson and twins Tia and Tina Clayton.

While explaining that the world-renowned coach and his family are grateful for the “excellent treatment and support being provided”, James asked the public to respect their privacy.

“While there has been understandable concern regarding his well-being, Mr. Francis has requested that the details of his medical condition, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis remain private. The club respectfully asks that his wishes be honoured.”

James noted that MVP appreciates the many expressions of concern, prayers and well wishes for Francis, who has guided the careers of Olympic, World Championship and national athletes for decades.

Jamaica’s success as a track and field giant has in large measure been through the success of MVP and Francis, who is considered a coaching genius worldwide.

The track club sought to assure Jamaican fans that while its priority is to support Francis and his family, this will be done “while ensuring the continued operations of the club and the ongoing preparation of our athletes. We are confident that the systems, coaching staff and leadership within MVP will continue to provide the high standard of coaching and athlete support for which the club is recognized.”
