Tevin Foster closed a contrasting five-furlong straight two-timer yesterday, angling speedy MISS MONEYPENNY from post-position two to the faster stands’ side, repelling stablemate I DREAM AGAIN by two and a half lengths in the Don Wehby Sr Memorial.
Foster had earlier partnered MONEY BOX to victory over the straight course, drawn widest at post-position 16, getting a clear path to mow down THE GIFTED ONE and IRISH WISH with a strong last-furlong kick.
Punters sent off MISS MONEYPENNY at odds of 6-1, wary of her chances of clearing post-position two in time to catch 8-5 favourite I DREAM AGAIN, who enjoyed a good draw at stall nine.
Foster put those fears to rest by hustling the Bern Identity-Pomeroy’s Secret filly to midtrack, chasing 99-1 outsider MY SUNSHINE, who wilted under the heat inside the last furlong.
I DREAM AGAIN tried charging late, along with BOB THE BUILDER, who was banged around at the start, neither strong enough to catch MISS MONEYPENNY pulling away at the end to win by two and a half lengths in 1:00.1 for champion and leading trainer Jason DaCosta.
Anthony Nunes, who started the day trailing DaCosta by roughly $6 million in stakes, saddled back-to-back winners, three-year-old debutant WALK THE PLANK and Jamaica Oaks hopeful TIA MARIA at nine furlongs and 25 yards in the fillies-only Simply Magic Cup.
WALK THE PLANK (Buzz Nightmare-Rackam’s Mistress), half-brother to Captain Sparrow (Soul Warrior), who was third behind Crown Chaser and RUN JULIE RUN in the 2024 Jamaica Derby, dismissed SHE’S IDEAL on the lead to easily win the six-furlong John Clifton Wright Memorial on debut, clocking 1:13.1.
Reyan Lewis, who partnered 6-5 favourite WALK THE PLANK, returned to close a two-timer aboard Patrick Lynch’s 3-1 chance, D’STORM, holding off the surge of 26-1 outsider SECRET SENSATION at seven furlongs in the eighth.
Claiming rider Jaheim Anderson won back-to-back races early on the 10-race card, CASUALLY YOURS (6-1) and SOLACE (4-1), destabilising the Reggae 6 in second and third events, respectively.
FOUR THIRTY opening the Reggae 6 at odds of 7-2 and BALLISTIC MISSILE upstaging rivals at 4-1 from post-position one in the fourth, added to a pile-up of beaten punters, resulting in payouts of $1,044,905 to winning tickets.
Racing continues on Saturday, a week ahead of what is expected to be a bumper racecard featuring the return of the Grade One Diamond Mile for a purse of $10m, a win-and-you’re-in for December’s US$300,000 Mouttet Mile.
