Losses leave Humble Lion coach under pressure

Davion Megoo, head coach of Jamaica Premier League (JPL) outfit Humble Lion, says his job could come under threat if the team continues to lose matches this season.

Humble Lion, who were promoted back to the JPL this campaign, suffered their third consecutive defeat after going down 4-1 to defending champions Portmore United.

The loss left the Clarendon-based club at the foot of the 14-team standings without a point. Megoo said his team needs to start collecting points quickly or face the consequences.

“There is naturally going to be pressure. I just have to cope with the positives that I see. I know that it is a work in progress and I look for the positives, and I am also looking at the things that we are not doing so right,” said Megoo.

“Football is a results-driven game, and so I have to start getting some results soon,” he said.

Megoo added that his team performed well for long periods of the contest, but a number of forced substitutions disrupted their balance and contributed to them conceding three goals in quick succession.

“We just have to be consistent in doing the right things. Yesterday (Sunday) we played the defending champions, and they are also semi-finalists in the Caribbean Cup,” he said.

“At the 60th minute of the game we were in the game; and at the 65th minute we gave up three goals in nine minutes.”

“We had a lot of forced changes because I made five changes, and all those changes were forced changes. There were players who were injured and I had to replace those players, and so that threw off the balance of the team because those changes were made in close proximity,” Megoo stated.

Humble Lion have conceded 12 goals in three matches while scoring just once.

He also highlighted his team’s defensive struggles, but took encouragement from their first goal of the season on Sunday.

“Definitely, the defence is one of the areas of concern because we keep on giving up goals,” Megoo shared.

“That goal was very good and we just have to take the positives; and getting on the scoresheet was a positive. We created a few more opportunities that we just didn’t convert, so it is a work in progress,” he said.
