Alonso commits to Aston Martin

SILVERSTONE, England (AP):

Veteran Fernando Alonso has confirmed that he will continue his Formula One career next year after taking time to weigh his future.

Aston Martin announced yesterday that Alonso, 45, and teammate Lance Stroll had both signed long-term contract extensions.

The two-time world champion said he was “very happy” with the new deal despite suggesting ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix that a move to the World Endurance Championship instead of F1 was a possibility.

“I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level,” Alonso said. “I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed.”

Alonso has been among the drivers voicing concerns about the 2026 cars’ reliance on electrical power and the compromises required on track. Earlier this year, Max Verstappen said he had even considered leaving F1 if changes were not made. Formula One announced in June that it would increase engine power and reduce electrical hybrid power from next year.

Aston Martin have struggled to adapt to regulations that have reduced the influence of driver input, but Alonso said he remained confident in the team’s direction.

“I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners, and facilities,” he said. “I look forward to making more memories on the racetrack in front of the passionate fans. Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special.”

Alonso has scored just three points from 15 races this season. His best result was a ninth-place finish in the Netherlands in August.
