Clarendon chasing back-to-back Ben Francis titles

Defending champions Clarendon College will take on an ambitious Manchester High when the ISSA Ben Francis KO quarterfinals get under way at Manchester Playfield at 3 p.m. today.

After an eye-catching round of 16, the final eight teams return to action today, each with their sights set on securing a place in the semi-finals.

According to Clarendon’s goalkeeper coach Nicholas Salter, the defending champions are determined to retain their title.

“We want, are willing and need to go back-to-back as champions. We need to send a statement to the rest of the league that we are here,” said Salter.

“We intend to maintain the same simple gameplay while making necessary adjustments. We saw bits and pieces of things that needed adjustment, and worked on them to be ready for today’s game,” added Salter.

Manchester defeated Cornwall College 2-0, while Clarendon College brushed aside Ocho Rios High by the same score on Wednesday to book their place in the quarterfinals.

While Manchester are yet to capture a schoolboy football title, Clarendon College enter the quarterfinal clash with five championships to their name, highlighting the rich football tradition that runs deep in the parish.

An intriguing battle awaits at Munro Playfield today as the hosts take on Denbigh High at 3 p.m.

Sleeping giants Munro College will look to maintain their impressive form when they take on a dangerous Clarendon-based Denbigh.

With home advantage in their favour, Munro will be counting on their loyal supporters to provide the extra push as they hunt a place in the semi-finals.

Munro’s coach Everdean Scarlett said the team remains confident and motivated to compete for trophies.

“The team intends to exert their best efforts to secure silverware this season. I think the guys have something to play for. They are playing with meaning, and want to bring some glory up on top of the hill. Our goal is to compete for all available trophies,” said Scarlett.
