The GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sport will host its Sport Heritage Symposium on October 22 at the college in Spanish Town, St Catherine.
The symposium, themed ‘The GC Foster College Story: A Legacy of Excellence, A Future of Possibilities’, will bring together sport practitioners, scholars, students, partners and key stakeholders to celebrate the institution’s contribution to Jamaica’s sporting development, while examining opportunities for its future.
The event forms part of the college’s ongoing efforts to document, preserve and promote its rich institutional and sporting heritage, while fostering meaningful dialogue on the future of sport education, leadership and development in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
Celebrating legacy
GC Foster College continues to play an important role in preparing teachers, coaches, administrators, sport professionals and leaders who have contributed to Jamaica’s sporting success.
The Sport Heritage Symposium will provide a platform to reflect on the people, programmes, achievements and milestones that have shaped the college and influenced Jamaican sport.
It will also explore how the institution can leverage its heritage as a foundation for innovation, partnerships, research, entrepreneurship and expanded opportunities for future generations.
The symposium will focus on three broad areas:
• Advancing education through research, innovation and quality teaching.
• Developing leaders in sport, fitness and wellness for national and global impact.
• Celebrating heritage by honouring the college’s legacy while inspiring future generations.
The programme is expected to feature presentations, panel discussions, reflections from practitioners and scholars, and opportunities for stakeholder engagement.
Presenters are expected to include:
• Maurice Wilson
• Carole Beckford
• Spencer Darlington
• Dr Astrid Mel
• Dr David Edwards
• Dr Michelle Monaco
• Dr Allison Murphy
As GC Foster College approaches its 50th anniversary in 2030, the symposium is also expected to contribute to a broader conversation about the institution’s future direction.
Areas for discussion may include strengthening sport education, expanding international partnerships, advancing research and innovation, preserving Jamaica’s sporting history, improving industry linkages, and creating new pathways for students and sport professionals.
The college is inviting sport practitioners, academics, historians, alumni, government and corporate partners, sporting organisations, students and other stakeholders to participate in the conversation.
The symposium is expected to become an important platform for connecting GC Foster College’s heritage with emerging opportunities in the business, education and development of sport.
