Montego Bay United (MBU) head coach Javier Ainstein is looking to build a more cohesive and tactically versatile outfit as he works to establish a distinct playing identity for the club.

The Argentine is focused on developing a team that combines its natural attacking strengths with greater composure on the ball, improved decision-making and a more organised approach to the game.

“The game is not just possession. It is about a positional game, where every player has an order and is important,” Ainstein explained.

“How you associate with your teammates is really important, and the advantages you can gain on the pitch, numerically and in quality, are really important today,” he added.

Ainstein believes broadening his players’ understanding of football will not only benefit the team but also prepare them for opportunities to compete in overseas leagues.

The MBU coach took the reins this season and is yet to taste defeat, with his team sitting atop the standings on 13 points.

He acknowledged that introducing his philosophy requires adjustments but sees it as an opportunity to help players expand their skill sets and develop a more rounded understanding of the game.

His ambitions also extend to improving the team’s effectiveness in front of goal, with an emphasis on patience and better decision-making in attacking areas.

“This is a challenge because sometimes the players are rushing to arrive at scoring chances. It is not about rushing; it is about getting into scoring positions with quality,” he said.

Ainstein expressed satisfaction with MBU’s recruitment efforts but indicated that the club remains open to strengthening its squad as it continues to assess its needs.

“I’m really happy with the team that we have, and it’s very important that the team grows. We have talented players,” said Ainstein.

According to the coach, there is enough quality within the squad for him to work with. He highlighted the likes of Jordain Fletcher, Davonte Campbell, Courtney Allen, Brazilian Lucas Lima, Dwight Merrick, Jesus Murillo and Jeremy Nelson as players in whom he has high hopes.

The club must also consider the possibility of players being called up for international duty during the Nations League.

As a result, further recruitment remains an option as MBU seek to maintain adequate depth and remain competitive throughout the campaign.

For Ainstein, the broader objective is to build a cohesive unit capable of adapting to different challenges while continuing to develop both collectively and individually.

He also believes that improving players’ tactical understanding and professionalism can help open doors to opportunities beyond Jamaica.

As MBU continue to shape their identity under the Argentine coach, the focus will be on translating that vision into consistent performances on the pitch.

Today, the former champions will face Arnett Gardens at Jarrett Park at 3 p.m. as they look to extend their winning momentum.
