MANCHESTER, England (CMC):

Khadija Shaw continued her impressive goalscoring form for Manchester City, but the league leaders were forced to settle for a share of the points against Manchester United in their Women’s Super League (WSL) clash on Sunday.

Shaw’s early second-half strike was cancelled out by Elisabeth Terland’s late equaliser as the teams played to a 1-1 draw at Leigh Sports Village, ending City’s perfect start to the season.

United’s defenders did well to keep the Jamaican international quiet during the first half, but that changed after the break.

Shaw needed just one opportunity and made full use of it when Dominique Janssen allowed her to spin on the edge of the box before drilling a powerful shot past goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce in the 66th minute.

It was her eighth goal in seven WSL matches and extended her lead at the top of the scoring charts to two goals.

However, United responded strongly and came close to equalising when Julia Zigiotti blasted over from close range, while Jess Park saw an effort rebound off the woodwork.

City appeared on course for a seventh consecutive victory, but with one minute remaining in regulation time, Terland fired into the roof of the net after Shaw failed to clear a deep free kick.

The result left defending champions City and Chelsea level at the top of the WSL standings on 19 points, having recorded six wins and one draw from seven matches.
