Regional leaders virtual summit postponed

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders, who were due to meet virtually on Friday to discuss the situation in Haiti, where efforts continue to end the socio-economic and political crisis, have had to postpone their deliberations.

The Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat said that the postponement was due “to unforeseen circumstances” and that the summit has been scheduled to a later date.

It gave no date for when the meeting would take place, but apologised “for any inconvenience caused”.

Informed sources had told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that the virtual meeting of the 41st Inter-Sessional Meeting would also discuss the readiness of member states to implement free movement under the protocol for enhanced cooperation.

The free movement forms part of the wider CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) that allows for the free movement of goods, skills, labour and services across the15-member regional integration grouping.

The new date for the meeting is expected to come later this month as the regional leaders prepare for their summit in Jamaica on July 6-8, where Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness will take over the chairmanship of the regional grouping from Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley.
