Though David Summerbell won the bragging rights at the Emancipation Day Dover race meet last Monday, it was the camaraderie by fellow competitor George Bayley that won the hearts of thousands of fans.

In his penultimate event, Summerbell had a mishap during which the right rear axle broke off on his Mitsubishi Evolution VIII.

Unable to source the parts in time for the start of the day's final event, things were looking bleak for Summerbell.

"I was sitting in my pit when I saw members of Summerbell's mechanical team coming over and began looking at my car. They went away and returned with Summerbell who, without saying a word [to me], took a closer look [at my car]," said Bayley.

"I asked him several times if he wanted to continue racing but he did not answer. He just kept staring at the car. From the look on his face, anybody could tell that he really wanted to race," he continued.

Bayley then made the decision. He gave Summerbell's mechanics the okay to use his back-end on the ace driver's car.

"It was just my Christian principles. When you are a true Christian you don't put material things before people. Everybody cannot be the same, Jesus is the answer," Bayley told Automotives.

By the time Summerbell's repaired Evo VIII hit the track, he was more than half lap behind. The thunderous cheers of the crowd seemed to have injected new life in him and one by one he chased down and over-took his rivals.

Summerbell passed Peter Rae, however, it was too late to catch the race leader Matthew Gore.

Sportsmanship

"For me, it was the highest level of sportsmanship anyone could have displayed," said Summerbell, who described his feelings as "awesome".

"If the race was a little longer, him woulda win," argued a group of excited patrons.

Summerbell ended the day with two wins and a second place. Other good performances came from Dion Gardner who dominated the IP 33 and motorcyclist Adrian Blake who took the chequered flag twice.

It was a great day for the Montego Bay-based drivers.

"I think it was the first time that the entire family brought home a trophy each," said Doug Gore.

His brother, Matthew, and his 64-year-old father, Neil, put on a good show. Gore (Doug) said he is now refocusing on the Evo V which has given him better results.

Peter Rae, who was consistent with his Mazada RX7, got a warm welcome from the crowd.

"It was a great meet. We did some adjustments to the car and it worked out well," said Rae.
