Grey Ground residents demonstrate against police
Grey Ground, Manchester:
A large crowd demonstrated and partially blocked the Grey Ground to Mandeville main road, on Monday, to vent their anger over the killing of 28-year-old Damion Hendricks, allegedly by a policeman.
A man who claimed to be an eyewitness to the incident, told The Gleaner, that about 3 a.m. Monday morning, the policeman and Hendricks were in a night club in the parish. He said several policemen "corner Hendricks", who was trying to leave and pushed him to the ground.
The eyewitness said, it was not clear what transpired between them, except that he saw a policeman placing a gun over Hendrick's chest, after which he heard an explosion.
Superintendent Lascelles Taylor, the officer in charge of the Manchester police, told The Gleaner, that a gun and seven live rounds were recovered from Hendricks' body.
He also said the policemen who went to the club acted on intelligence, as the club is a known hangout for gunmen and other criminals.
This was however denied by Hendricks' younger brother, Jason, who was also on the scene at the time of the shooting.
Councillor for the Mandeville division Sally Porteous, wants a thorough investigation into the matter and the removal of the policeman involved from front-line duty.
