Melville wins Cal's pool tournament

Calhoun Melville from Chelsea won the second leg of the Cal's Spring Water/Real Vibes Party Wine Pool tour at the Upper Level Sports Bar in Mandeville last weekend, defeating the season's top-ranked player, Ewart Hall from Hot Shots, 4-1 in the best-of-seven final on Sunday.

For his efforts, Melville received $80,000 and a trophy, while Hall, who was losing his second consecutive final of the tour, secured $35,000 and a trophy.

MoBay's Noel 'Schoolboy' Blagrove, winner of the leg of the tour at Hot Shots on August 29 when defeating Ewart Hall, rebounded from his 1-4 loss to Melville in the semis to beat Andreous Gillings 4-2 in the third-place play-off to secure $15,000 and a trophy, while Gillings received $7,000 for fourth. Players finishing from fifth to eighth place each received $2,500.

Junior Wilson placed fifth, followed by Gary Manning, Ocheign Carlos and Elvis Newman.

A total of 42 players contested the tournament. The third leg of the tour (a double elimination tournament) takes place on October 16 and 17 at Kendan Pool and Games, 32 Jarrett Street, MoBay.

The competition is run by the newly formed Jamaica Billiards Association.

BoJ, Scotia win inter-bank matches

The JNBS/Western Sports-sponsored Norman Goodison Inter-Bank league continues tomorrow with the usual three matches at two venues.

In the first match at 2 p.m. at the NWC playing field, Mona, JNBS will oppose FirstCaribbean International Bank. Then at 4 p.m., leaders and defending champions Scotiabank take on Pan Caribbean.

In the lone match at the old men's hockey field in Mona, BoJ will oppose RBTT starting at 3 pm.

Last Sunday, BoJ defeated former joint leaders JNBS 3-0, with two second-half penalties from Andre Campbell. Scotiabank, meanwhile, crushed FirstCaribbean 7-0, thanks to a hat-trick from Tivoli premier league player Damion Gordon and a brace from Richard West.

In the third match, Pan Caribbean/Sagicor came from two goals down to clip RBTT 3-2. Kelvin Lawrence handed RBTT a 2-0 lead at half-time. But two second-half goals from Jesse Reynolds and one from St Matthew Anglin clinched victory for Pan Caribbean/Sagicor.

Racing Fraternity League final postponed

Due to the inclement weather, all scheduled matches in the Racing Fraternity League this week have been postponed to next week.

As a result, the final which was scheduled to be played at Ironside ground in Gregory Park tomorrow has been rescheduled to Sunday, October 17.

Meanwhile, Landscape have won Zone 'A' of the competition with a perfect record, thanks to five wins for a maximum 15 points.

Owners and Grooms are second and third, respectively, and one of these teams should accompany Landscape from Zone 'A' to the semi-final round.

In Zone 'B', unbeaten Racing Links are on top with 10 points, representing three wins and a draw. Exercise Riders are second with eight points, while Security have seven. Two of these teams will advance to the semi-finals from the zone.

Hermon Spoerri double wicket postponed

The weather continues to play havoc with the Business House cricket competition as the Noranda Bauxite Partners 35-over final between LIME and NHT which should have been played at Chalmers Avenue last Sunday had to be postponed.

The Business House Cricket Board has also postponed tomorrow's annual renewal of the Hermon Spoerri double-wicket cricket competition scheduled for the Jamaica Broilers field at Spring Village, St Catherine.

A spokesman for the Business House Cricket Board said the double-wicket competition will more than likely be rescheduled for later this month. The one-day competition will see all 10 participating teams in action, including defending champions NWC.

Business House cricket is sponsored by Digicel, Jamaica Broilers through its Best Dressed Chicken and Reggae Jammin brands, as well as Noranda Bauxite Partners Limited.

New date for Clarendon Business House final

Following three unsuccessful attempts, the Tait's Pharmacy-sponsored Clarendon Business House six-a-side final between Mack Chem and Juici Patties has been postponed to Sunday, October 10 at the Mineral Heights football field.

The day's action is expected to begin at 7 a.m. with the third-place play-off between Sinclair's and Government Agencies. The big final is slated for 8 a.m.

The final was originally slated for Wednesday, September 22. However, heavy rains forced the organisers to postpone it twice, the last being Tuesday of this week. The series of postponements is likely to have little effect on the build-up, given the two teams' outstanding goalscoring display in their respective semi-finals. Interestingly, both recorded identical 5-1 victories.

Hope Village book final spot in Bunting league

Hope Village became the first finalists in the Peter Bunting-sponsored Georges Valley Corner League football competition in central Manchester, after getting the better of Sweden Street 5-4 on penalties. The two had battled to an exciting 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time.

However, Hope Village will have to wait as their opponents will be decided tomorrow, weather permitting, at the deCarteret College sports ground. Red Square and Comfort will go at each other again after bad light forced the suspension of their semi-final as the deciding penalties were being taken.

The day's proceedings had begun with the shock news that Red Square had been promoted to the semi-finals after Belair Boyz failed to show. The two had met the previous week in a game that was later disrupted at half-time. The competition committee ruled a replay.

Manchester, Clarendon FAs postpone football awards

Manchester and Clarendon football associations have postponed their respective awards ceremonies for the 2009-10 season due to the inclement weather. Both have yet to release a new date as the schedule of primary sponsor, Captain's Bakery and its head, JFF president Captain Horace Burrell, will have to be ascertained.

Manchester were due to host their ceremony at the Golf View Hotel in Mandeville on Wednesday, September 29 with their neighbours' ceremony on Thursday, September 30 at the Bridge Palm Hotel in Toll Gate.

Portmore Pines host cricket awards

Portmore Pines Cricket Club, in association with sponsors Real Vibes Party Wine, hosted their inaugural awards function recently at Cashew Park in Portmore Pines, St Catherine. The top performer was Garfield Brown, who walked away with two major awards, best all-rounder and his team's most valuable player.

He was also runner-up to Nicholas Eccleston (11 wickets) for most wickets (eight). Terrence Brown received the award for most aggregate runs, scoring 120 in four matches. Richard Grant took the runner-up spot with 112 runs.

Guest speaker for the function, Patrick Watson, Social Development Commission (SDC) branch manager for Portmore, said the main reason for Portmore Pines' success in the Portmore leg of the SDC national twenty/20 tournament was the club's strong administrative system and the discipline of the players.

There was good news for the club, as Cal's Manufacturing Limited's general manager, Nugent Ximinies, the distributor of Real Vibes Party Wine, said that his company will be sponsoring the club for many years to come.
