Clovis closes a chapter
Former FirstCaribbean International Bank managing director, Clovis Metcalfe, has been hailed as a phenomenal banker on his retirement from the bank.
Speaking at the farewell reception for him on Monday, new managing director, Nigel Holness, said it was a celebration of a "virtual lifetime of contribution of a phenomenal banker" over four decades. He said that at FirstCaribbean, they "speak of Clovis with a deep respect for a man regarded as an encyclopaedia of knowledge on banking, which he humbly shares without hesitation."
He said that Metcalfe's colleagues particularly appreciated his "jovial, approachable, affable style", and that it was "a credit to his receptivity to change and commitment to development, that he has weathered the challenges of a dynamic industry over a 46-year journey that has brought a redefinition of traditional banking in virtually every sphere."
Metcalfe, Holness said, "has remained current, presiding with competence over every change, and has successfully melded 'new banking' techniques with his signature brand of 'relationship banking' for the benefit of the FirstCaribbean International Bank and our ever-growing list of customers." Metcalfe, who will remain on the bank's board of directors, pledged to "continue to make a contribution to FirstCaribbean, its customers and the wider industry."
His 46 years he said, has seen him celebrating milestones and successes with customers and families and the dynamic characteristic of banking - the advances in procedure, in processes, in techno-logy - have kept him interested, intrigued and energised throughout. He noted that computers, credit and debit cards, online banking and mobile banking now being pioneered here by FirstCaribbean, have revolutionised the banking industry and said that he looks on with pride in particular at the growth of FirstCaribbean's Jamaica operations and the confidence and trust engendered across the society.
"I can wholeheartedly say that in FirstCaribbean International Bank, I am well pleased," Metcalfe declared.
