Health ministry tracking 'winter diarrhoea'

THE MINISTRY of Health continues to monitor the recent rise in the number of reported cases of gastroenteritis over the past weeks.

The disease, which is also called 'Winter Diarrhoea', is caused by Rotavirus, which tends to affect mostly children under the age of five years.

Dr Eva Lewis-Fuller, director of health promotion and protection in the Ministry of Health, said the country was seeing the usual pattern of an increase in the virus, which could be prolonged up to March.

"We usually see an increase in the cases of diarrhoea reported, particularly among children under five. The colder months seem to be more conducive to the propagation of the virus that causes the diarrhoea, which is usually a rotavirus," she said.

The expert further explained that the climb in the figures, however, does not signify an outbreak, as it was within the usual pattern for the season.

She encouraged persons to wash hands before meals and after using the bathroom, as well as to ensure that water and food are safe for consumption.

Dr Lewis-Fuller encouraged persons to take children who are experiencing diarrhoea and/or vomiting to the nearest health facility, for assessment and treatment.
