Celebrating Black History Month: Issue:Should we teach Garveyism?

Published:Saturday | February 5, 2011 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

To those who've gone before us, to those who took buses to Washington, to those who dared to speak, to those who walked long distances to make their statements, to those who opened doors for us. To those who allowed us to take our places in this world of ours, to the Rosa Parkses of the world, to the Martin Luther Kings, to the NAACP - made up of our Jewish brothers who fought for us.

To those to gave us an opportunity to attend schools whose doors we could have never entered, to the John Kennedys and Jerry Browns of California who walked across the bridge and defied those who would ask his then governor father to remove him from the march.

To all these people who helped us grow, who were with us during the pain, we thank you.

Now we ask our friends from America, our friends from across the globe, the Government of Jamaica to take another step, to help us put The Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey in the circulating area of every library of the Jamaica Library Service, not only hidden in the reference rooms where you can't take them out.

Let us launch that campaign now in honour of Black History Month, so that people across Jamaica, especially our youth, can borrow that book, take it home, read it, and digest what it has to say. From that experience they will make great people of themselves.

I am, etc.,
