Bailey tunes up with 10.54

ON a day when his coach, Michael Clarke, was honoured at the Lucozade-sponsored G.C. Foster Classics, national 100 metres champion, Oshane Bailey, tuned up for the upcoming season with the fastest 100 metres of the day.

Representing Akan track club in the 100 metres for clubs and institutions, Bailey sprinted away from his rivals to win easily in 10.41 seconds to defeat Commonwealth Games 200-metre silver medallist Lansford Spence (10.54) of Sprint Tech Track Club.

"I felt fairly good with my run today and I am looking forward to the rest of the season as I have been training real hard," said Bailey, who stated that he does not feel any pressure being the national champion in the event.

Yesterday also saw national senior representative, Anastasia LeRoy of G.C. Foster College racing to an easy win in the women's 400 metres in 55.00 seconds to defeat MVP's Alecia Cutener (55.75) and her teammate Audrea Segree, third in 55.91.

"I am not pleased with my time but this was my first competitive race for the season, and I am very confident that I will improve as the season goes by," LeRoy said.

St Andrew High sprinter Rushelle Burton continued her fine form this season as she copped a fine double in Class Four. After winning the 70-metre hurdles in 11.05 seconds, she returned later to run the fastest Class Four time in the 100m clocking 12.76.

Holmwood Technical athletes dominated the female sprint hurdles as Yanique Thompson (11.72) won the Class Three 80-metre hurdles. She finish ahead of Camperdown High's Petagaye Williams, 11.88. The outstanding Janieve Russell was on top in Class Two in 14.34 with World Youth Olympics finalist Megan Simmonds who won her heat in 14.66, finishing second overall.

World Junior Championship representative, Steffan Fennell of Kingston College, geared up for Boys' Championships with a fine display in the Class One 110-metre hurdles. Running against a 2.8 metres per second wind, he won 14.12 seconds. Wolmer's Boys' Yanick Hart was second overall in 14.54.

It was one-two for Jamaica College in the boys' Class Two 110-metre hurdles as Chevon Richards (14.54) won to beat out teammate Tyler Mason (14.62).

In other results yesterday, Swept Track Club took the first two places in the clubs and institutions men's 400 metres as Omar Johnson clocked 47.81 seconds to finish ahead of teammate Kegan Campbell, 47.86.
