WESTERN BUREAU:

After 16 years in the business of transportation ,president of the St James Taxi Association, Dion Chance, launched D&A Taxi Service Company, Montego Bay's first integrated taxi service.

"We realised that MoBay needs an efficient and reliable call-and-pick-up taxi service that is affordable," Dion Chance said.

"What exists now is an informal system where someone may know a taxi operator and ask them to do pick-ups, and we want to change that and implement a system similar to what exists in Kingston."

With a small fleet of six drivers, the service will be split in four zones covering the St James region and its outskirts.

"We will add more routes as the demand increases, and in the coming week, we'll be offering promotional offers to help stimulate interest and awareness of the taxi service," he said.

"The starting rate for all areas is $500 for one to three persons, with the highest fare in Zone A at $1,200. The highest fare in the other zones will be $3,000."

The company hosted a launch last Saturday at Martina's Bar and Grill in Montego Bay where it introduced the new service to prospective clients. The investment into the venture is in the region of J$1 million.

The service will be run on a 24-hour basis. The office can be contacted at 971-1239, 320-8667, or 971-7967.

"Our intent is to lift the standard of transportation. Everything will be first-class and cost-effective, and it will be open to ordinary passengers and to corporate clients," Chance said.
