WESTERN BUREAU:

The people of Petersfield and adjoining communities in Westmoreland are the recipients of a newly constructed post office which was completed last month.

The facility, deemed necessary after the previous building that housed the agency fell into a state of disrepair, was constructed at a cost of $8.5 million.

"The original one was in a deplorable condition. We first looked at repairing (the first building), but it would not make economic sense," Roger Clarke, member of parliament for Westmoreland Central, told Western Focus on Tuesday.

The new facility will benefit about 12 communities including Carawina, Short Cut, Common, Brighin River Bridge, Amity, Logwood, and Roaring River.

According to Clarke, who is also minister of agriculture and fisheries, the cost of construction stood at $8.5 million.

"I have a sentimental attachment to this new facility as this was where I was registered, but more importantly, this makes things easier, especially for our senior citizens and pensioners."
