Kingston Wharves Limited (KWL) has acquired the stevedoring business of Shipping Services (Stevedoring) Limited, a longstanding provider of container stevedoring services on the Port of Kingston.

This acquisition, which was concluded on March 4, is an important step for KWL towards strengthening its position as the region's leading full-service multi-purpose port. Grantley Stephenson, chairman and CEO of Kingston Wharves, stated on the acquisition that, "it forms part of the company's efforts to expand and further streamline its cargo handling and delivery services to maximise overall efficiency of terminal operations".

As Caribbean ports ramp up to compete for the anticipated increased cargo moving through the region as a result of the Panama Canal expansion, this move by KWL to increase its stevedoring capacity is in keeping with its aspirations to capitalise on this pending opportunity.
