White Bread - The Milky Way
Krysta Anderson, Gleaner Writer
There is wheat, bran and now milk bread. National Bakery Company Limited recently launched its new product Healthy Start Premium Milk Bread, Weekender Plus.
Production Manager Donovan Taylor explained the concept behind the new white bread. He told Food that, with the decline in white bread sales, they also found that children did not like wheat or bran. "What we found was that children did not like wheat and bran bread. they only wanted white bread. So we capitalised on their desires by improving the quality of white bread to make it good for the body. That gave birth to Milk Bread."
A FULFILLING TASK
He told Food that the process of creating a healthy white bread was a strenuous-but-fulfilling task. Representatives from the National Bakery journeyed to the Institute of Baking and worked assiduously to improve white bread's nutritional value, "We tried butter with the milk, but that did not work, so we went back to the drawing board. We also tried adding milk with the brown bread, but it broke down the nutritional value of the wheat so we were back at square one with white bread. We then made the decision after seeing the nutritional value, to inject only the milk to bring the flavour right up." Of course they chose the healthier milk - skimmed milk.
Milk is high in calcium and geared towards strengthening the bones, making this milk bread ideal for growing children. Taylor affirmed, "We are trying to help children eat early in the morning as well as aim to balance their diet. Children just love foods that taste good, so we boosted the flavour of white bread from ordinary to extraordinary. While enjoying that great taste, children are receiving great nutritional value as well."
The milk bread is also good for senior citizens, lactating mothers, and for those who are not a fan of wheat or bran, but would like to receive health benefits from healthy eating.
The Food section recently put the bread to the test and here are some of the reviews.
Quite good. Very light and tasty. Should be a hit with the little one.
Great move to make a bread that is fortified with calcium, and even better that this is done with skimmed milk!
Great taste and great texture
Not as heavy as hard-dough, but more substantial than regular sliced bread. Healthy and enjoyable too.
Like all National bread products, they are all of good quality and I find the new addition irresistible.
The Milk Bread was good. I don't know if it's just me, but it's as if I could actually taste real milk.
I like it. It actually tastes very creamy and I'm not a fan of white bread.
