Ride with Hupomone
Orville Clarke, Gleaner Writer
The talented American 4-y-o filly, HUPOMONE, should rebound from the first loss of her career on April 13, by landing the 3-y-o and up overnight allowance feature for the Gerry Skelton Memorial Trophy over 1100 metres at Caymanas Park today.
Trained by reigning champion Wayne DaCosta, HUPOMONE was installed a howling 1-9 favourite to keep her unbeaten record intact last time out, but ran smack into the fleet-footed LASHING FORCE and was beaten into third place, 33/4 lengths away.
Racing for the first time in 10 months on that occasion, the 4-y-o daughter of Omega Code ran as though she needed the run. What's more, she dissipated her chances at the start by being slowly away in that fast-run round-five race.
When she last won in June 2012, HUPOMONE beat open allowance horses over the round-five course, holding on from PALACE GOLD and CLASSY PROSPECT in a fast 59.4.
Having worked well coming into this race, HUPOMONE, who runs with only 53.0kg under former champion jockey Dick Cardenas, should make amends over this snappy trip.
Her opponents
Among her six opponents are stable companion RIO COBRE, hat-trick seeker RUNJOHNNY RUN - now venturing up in class - and the speedy AWESOME CAMILLE, who pipped her for second behind LASHING FORCE on April 13.
They now oppose a more focused HUPOMONE, who only needs to leave the gates promptly to put away rivals in post-to-post fashion.
Elsewhere on the 10-race programme, the front-running BREDDA PAPA should outfinish old rival VONALMIGHTY to win the opening $450,000-$400,000 claiming race over 1600 metres, to be contested by seven starters.
BREDDA PAPA steps down in class after finishing a fair fifth to MILITARY MOVE over 1500 metres on a $550,000 claiming tag on May 4, a race in which he disputed the lead with MILITARY MOVE for a long way before backing up to finish four lengths fifth.
Now running on a $450,000 tag and connections calling for the promising 4.0kg claiming apprentice Romario Saunders, BREDDA PAPA, with a mere 51.0kg, should not be caught in this small field.
EASTWOOD, who beat a good field over a mile on March 20, can rebound with another win in the third race over 1400 metres, in which seven fit horses are slated to run.
His rivals include the recent winner ETHOS, consistent PRIESTKING and PRINCE ANDREW, who will be gunning to make all and could start favourite following his near miss against MILITARY MOVE over 1400 metres. But EASTWOOD is given the edge.
I also like CAPTAIN DJ in the second, SANKOFA (fourth), WESTERN BULL (fifth) and RHEA'S A SUPERSTAR (eighth).
