Western Bureau:

Clifton Young, operator of the Flagstaff Bakery along Barnett Street in Montego Bay, St James, was yesterday shot and killed by gunmen along that busy thoroughfare.

Reports from the police indicate that about 9 a.m., Young was on his way to make a lodgement at the Scotiabank sub-branch along Barnett Street when he was pounced upon by two men armed with guns who shot and robbed him.

He was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In the aftermath of the death of another business operator, superintendent of police in charge of St James, Egbert Parkins, again appealed to business operators and residents to call upon the police to offer protection whenever they wish to make lodgements to financial institutions.

"As the state agency responsible for the security of the citizens of this country, we offer the service of protecting persons wishing to make these lodgements free of cost. No money must be paid for this, so we are here to serve, and people must utilise this service as it helps to curtail crime and maintain safety," he said.

Parkins added, however, that some business operators have not been exercising the option of requesting protection, a practice which he said was dangerous and, in the case of Young, fatal.
