CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank recently presented a sponsorship cheque to Flankers Primary & Junior High School in Montego Bay. The donation, which will boost attendance and academic performance, will provide food and clothing for the students in this inner-city community.

Rupert Shaw, principal of the school, said that availability of food and clothing is a challenge for many students and "because of the poverty that exists in the community, many are not learning as they should, with a number of them exhibiting behavioural problems."

He noted, however, that several students have excelled in extra-curricular activities such as the annual festival competition, the Jamaica Bible Society Bible Quiz, and various football and netball competitions.

Shaw described the welfare programme "as an initiative to satisfy some of the basic needs of the children so that they can realise their full potential."

Valda Stewart, customer service manager of CIBC FirstCaribbean Montego Bay, said that the bank was happy to "contribute to the moulding of young minds and to their social and academic development."

The bank annually gives money, time and resources to several causes, including education, health care, sports, and, disaster relief.
