Illegal coal burning, limestone mining nuisance in Bull Bay

Published:Saturday | March 1, 2014 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is almost four years since I wrote and made phone calls to various government agencies about coal-burning activities and limestone mining in the hills of Bull Bay. There has been no response from the police and the National Environment and Planning Agency about the smoke and dust problem affecting Bull Bay.

Smoke continues to swirl from the burning of garbage, coal and dead animals, and the hills are stripped of vegetation for limestone mining. It amazes me that the Government has passed laws, including fines and jail time, yet the real culprits creating the public hazard and nuisance on sidewalks and roadways are ignored by all law-enforcement entities, to the detriment of the general public.

This constant dust and smoke is among the issues that adversely affect the quality of life. So much for peace of mind or fresh air.

The helplessness reflected in my experience is reinforced by underperforming politicians who demonstrate little or no interest in the poor quality of life or living conditions of most Jamaicans. A job description for all members of parliament, with established and agreed academic qualifications, should be a prerequisite for running for office.
