Deal with garbage pile-up in Mandeville
THE EDITOR, Sir;
I am awaiting the plan from Southern Parks and Markets (SPM) to deal with the burgeoning rubbish problem that has overtaken Mandeville since December 2013.
I am told by the usually cordial and efficient SPM customer service team that some of the garbage trucks are currently out of service. As a result of this, many residents are sitting on at least one month's worth of rubbish awaiting pickup; for others, it might be more. Prior to this, rubbish would normally be picked up once per week.
I have no doubt that there is some planning and organising going on behind the scenes to alleviate this problem as soon as possible, but in the interim, could some contingencies be put in place, such as removing the access fee to carry your rubbish to the dump, or establishing a drop-off point where people could take their rubbish to facilitate pickup by the remaining truck or trucks left to service the entire town.
The only plan I have heard thus far involves the borrowing of trucks from other regions, which I am sure is not an option, as other areas would then be undertrucked. After all, that would turn the entire Jamaica into one big pile of rubbish.
My heart goes out to the people who work on these garbage trucks during this time as the odours, maggots, and flies that effuse from the fermented garbage are not a pretty sight or smell.
SPM, we need to hear or see your contingency plan like last month!
