Harsh Sentence?
Attorneys for Vybz Kartel and the three men convicted with him for murder have reacted to the sentences handed down yesterday.
Miguel Lorne, who represented Shawn Campbell, better known as 'Shawn Storm':
"I really do think that it is a harsh sentence, especially in light of some of the evidence. Like I said in court, he [the judge] is a man that is known for reasonable sentencing, but this was a little excessive certainly for Shawn Campbell. Nevertheless, the jury has spoken, the judge has spoken and we now look forward to our Court of Appeal in a sober and quiet manner to look at all the evidence. Shawn Campbell is confident that in the long run, he'll be vindicated."
Christian Tavares-Finson, attorney for Vybz Kartel:
"We are not surprised by the sentence based on the posture of the judge at this stage. We did, indeed, advance certain mitigating factors, which, I think, did play a part in the sentence. We will be appealing both conviction and sentence on instructions from our clients. We certainly have [talked to Kartel] but that is privilege. Save and except, he has maintained his innocence, he still does and is interested in appealing his conviction."
Pierre Rogers, the attorney for Kahira Jones:
"I'd rather hold my space and think about my client's position before I speak."
