A look at the career of teacher William Vahey, regarded by the FBI as one of the most prolific paedophiles in memory:

August 1969: Arrested for allegedly molesting eight boys, ages seven through nine, while teaching beginner's swim class at a high school pool in Westminster, California.

September 1969: Starts job as teacher's aide at Long Beach Unified School District with court's knowledge and without informing school officials of charges.

January 1970: Pleads guilty to one felony count of lewd and lascivious acts and sentenced to 90 days in jail plus five years' probation that require he not be near boys under age 16 without supervision. Registers as sex offender. When registry is put online in 2004, Vahey isn't included because authorities discover he is no longer living in California.

January 1972: Allowed to leave California to work in Iran and finish probation unsupervised, starting on international stint that will take him to 10 schools on four continents teaching history, social studies and related subjects, almost always to middle school students.

1972-1973: Tehran American School in Iran.

1973-1975: American Community School of Beirut in Lebanon.

1975-1976: American School of Madrid in Spain.

1976-1978: Passargad School in Ahwaz, Iran.

1978-1980: American Community School in Athens, Greece.

1980-1992: Saudi Aramco Schools in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

1992-2002: Jakarta International Schools in Indonesia.

2002-2009: Escuela Campo Alegre in Caracas, Venezuela.

2009-2013: Southbank International School in London.

August 2013-March 2014: American Nicaragua School in Pista Suburbana, Managua.

November 2013: Maid fired for stealing USB drive from Vahey's residence.
