Anime Picnic, the pop culture outdoor festival organised by the Anime Nerds of Jamaica (ANJ), is scheduled to return on Saturday, June 27, at the Confucius Institute at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona. Beginning at 11:30 a.m., the event will feature anime and cosplay competitions, gaming experiences and esports tournaments, as well as cultural activities inspired by Chinese traditions.

Under the theme, ‘Jade Dynasty: The Lotus Festival’, this year's staging will celebrate the influence of Chinese culture on many of the forms of entertainment enjoyed by anime fans today.

“Many fans may not realise how much Chinese culture has influenced the entertainment they enjoy — from anime, video games and comics to the growing popularity of manhua and Chinese dramas around the world. We also wanted to celebrate the local Chinese community, which has long been an important part of Jamaica’s diverse cultural landscape,” said Tianna Powell, president of ANJ, speaking on the significance of this year’s theme.

Among those scheduled to speak at the event are Montego Bay Mayor Richard Vernon, who will engage with attendees as part of the day's programme, and Yangsen Li, CEO of LCH Development and Pinnacle Montego Bay and chair of Jamaica's Spring Festival celebrations, who will speak on cultural exchange, business development and international collaboration.

Powell noted that cultural exchange has long been a cornerstone of the event and the organisation.

“Many people are introduced to different cultures through anime, gaming, and popular media, and this year's theme gives us an opportunity to explore those connections more deeply,” she added.

Asked how the local anime community has evolved over the years, Powell said one of the most noticeable changes has been the confidence with which people embrace their interests.

“More people are comfortable expressing their interests, whether that is attending events, creating content, or showing up in cosplay in public spaces,” she shared.

Among this year's sponsors and partners are the Tourism Enhancement Fund, the Tourism Linkages Network and SEHRA, which will provide free HIV and STD testing services on-site for patrons seeking confidential screening and health information.

“By offering HIV and STI testing, we're helping to promote awareness, encourage responsible health practices, and make these services more accessible to young people and the wider community. We believe community events can play an important role in connecting people with valuable information and support,” Powell said.
