An investigation has been launched into the fatal shooting of a man by the police in the community of Wailers in St Andrew.

The deceased has been identified as 31-year-old Shaquille Pellington, otherwise called ‘Biggs’, of Penwood Lane, Kingston 11.

The police say a Taurus G3 semi-automatic pistol containing four rounds of ammunition was recovered from Pellington at the scene.

Reports from the Olympic Gardens police are that about 6:05 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, a police team conducting operational duties in the area received information about armed men in the vicinity of Penwood Lane in the Wailers community.

The police say the team responded and, while conducting checks at a premises in the community, encountered a man who pointed a firearm in their direction.

They say a policeman, fearing for his life, discharged his weapon, hitting the man.

The injured man was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The matter has been reported to the police’s Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau and the Independent Commission of Investigations.

The police say intelligence reports indicate that Pellington was a major criminal actor in Wailers, Waterhouse and the wider Olympic Gardens area.

According to the police, he was reportedly a prominent member of the Wailers Gang and had strong associations with criminal networks locally and overseas.

They say Pellington was linked to several murders and shootings across the St Andrew South Police Division, including the recent double murder of Kirk Jenkins and Andrew Berry, as well as a shooting incident in which a woman was wounded along Balcombe Drive, Kingston 11, on Sunday, October 11, 2026.

Further checks, the police say, revealed that Pellington had most recently been charged in connection with the murder of Sequan Grant, otherwise called ‘Kushie’, which occurred along Bishop Avenue, Kingston 11, on November 15, 2025.

He was subsequently granted bail by the court.

Pellington also had a lengthy criminal history, having previously been charged with offences including murder, shooting and sexual offences.
