WI women aim to complete clean sweep against New Zealand Women

West Indies Women will be aiming to complete a clean sweep of their One-Day International, ODI,  series against New Zealand when the two sides meet in the fourth and final fixture in St Kitts tomorrow.

West Indies have already won the series, by establishing an unassailable three-nil lead after impressive wins against the visitors.

Captain Merissa Aguilleira says her side will be looking to end the series on a high.

INSPORTS bringing baseball to schools

The Institute of Sports, INSPORTS, is moving ahead with plans  to introduce baseball to schools.

INSPORTS baseball Director Donovan Corcho says 31 physical education teachers from St Catherine have already been sensitised about the baseball initiatives.

It will be launched during this academic year.

Corcho says INSPORTS objective is to sensitise the St Catherine schools that there is a vibrant primary school baseball project afoot.

Li Na to retire over injuries

The Chinese state media is reporting that Grand Slam winner Li Na is to announce her retirement from tennis.

The 32-year-old won the Australian Open in January to add to her 2011 French Open title.

However, the world number six has not played since losing in the third round at Wimbledon in June.

State broadcaster CCTV said Li was retiring because of knee injury concerns and will announce her decision tomorrow.

Li became a national sporting hero in China after becoming Asia's first grand slam singles champion.

USA golfing pro to stage clinics in Jamaica

Long drive professional golfer Maurice Allen will conduct two golf clinics and exhibitions in Jamaica this weekend.

The Atlanta-based Allen will stage the first clinic and exhibition tomorrow at the Constant Spring Golf Course in Kingston.

He travels to Montego Bay for the second clinic and exhibition at the Cinnamon Hill Golf Course.

Among the highlights at the exhibition will be a demonstration of power hitting by Allen.

The 32-year-old American is Guineas World Record holder.

Everton put four past Wolfsburg

Everton marked their Europa League return with a dominant 4-1 victory over Germans Wolfsburg at Goodison Park in England today.

The Toffees, back in the tournament for the first time since 2010, controlled much of the game as a Ricardo Rodriguez own goal and a Seamus Coleman header gave them a 2-0 half-time lead.

Leighton Baines put the game beyond Wolfsburg with a second-half penalty.

Kevin Mirallas drilled in a late fourth for Everton before Rodriguez grabbed a consolation with a curled free-kick.

The win puts Everton top of Group H.

The Jamaica Civil Service Association says it will be filing an appeal with the Public Services Commission on behalf of Dahlia Harris, who was ousted as Principal Director of Culture in the Ministry of Youth and Culture.

Association President O’Neil Grant says Ms Harris was called into a meeting on Monday by the ministry’s permanent secretary where she was told that her services were no longer needed.

Scottish independence: Counting begins in referendum

IN international news...The polls have closed and counting is under way in the referendum to decide whether Scotland should stay in the UK or become an independent country.

Counting will be carried out through the night, with individual results announced for each of Scotland's 32 local authority areas.

A poll published shortly after polls closed suggested "No" was on 54 percent and "Yes" on 46 percent of the ballots.

Municipal policeman stabbed

A municipal police officer had to be rushed to the May Pen hospital a short while ago after he was allegedly stabbed by a vendor along Main Street in the Clarendon capital.

Preliminary reports are that the officer approached a vendor along Main Street, an argument developed and a tussle ensued.

The officer fell to the ground and another vendor proceeded to stab him several times.

He was taken to the hospital where he is being treated.

His condition is not known.

Royal and Ancient Golf Club votes to accept women members

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club in Scotland has voted in favour of allowing women members for the first time in its 260-year history.

The St Andrews-based club has 2,400 global members who were entitled to vote and more than three-quarters took part in the ballot.

Of those that voted, 85 per cent were in favour of change.

Founded in 1754, the Royal and Ancient's members play on the St Andrews links course regarded as the home of golf.
