Jamaican and West Indies captain Chris Gayle is joining the Indian Premier League on an US$800,000 contract.

Gayle was purchased today in an auction in India by Calcutta, one of eight franchises.

His international teammate Ramnaresh Sarwan was bought by Mohali for US$225,000 and Shivnarine Chanderpual was purchased by Bangalore for US$200,000.

The contracts will run for three years and are guaranteed by the Indian Cricket Board.

Several of the world’s top cricketers were purchased by the IPL’s eight franchises, with India’s Mahendra Dhoni, who was purchased by Chennai being the most expensive at US$1.5 million.

The multi-million pound 20/20 tournament will feature eight city franchises playing 59 matches in total.

The tournament begins on April 18 and runs for 44 days.
