Curfews in place

Curfews are in several areas across Jamaica, but there have still been reports of looting. The Prime Minister says she is assessing the situation.



Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller said earlier today that the security forces may not be able to go to the polls this week as expected and that there could be a postponement of the August 27 polls.



The Prime Minister says she could take stronger action in response to the current security threat to the island.



A curfew is now on in several areas, but there have still been reports of looting and the Prime Minister says she is assessing the situation.



The Prime Minister also says several countries have pledged to assist in the relief effort.



Meanwhile, she says she has summoned cabinet ministers to an emergency meeting for tomorrow to further assess the effects of the hurricane:

Cable & Wireless is reporting that its fixed line and mobile networks are still functioning.





House collapse rescue



Rescue workers are still trying to remove debris from a house in Liguanea, of St. Andrew.



It’s reported that a section of the house collapsed earlier this afternoon:



300,000 will be affected by dean in JA - ODPEM



Director General of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), Ronald Jackson says more than 4 thousand 500 people are now in shelters islandwide.

He says about 300,000 people will be affected either directly or indirectly by the category four Hurricane Dean.





Dean leaving Kingston, moving south



Head of the Weather Branch at the national Met Service Evan Thompson says the centre of Hurricane Dean is now leaving the south of Kingston is a westward direction:
