BITU accuses Bahia hotel of union busting
The Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) is accusing the management of the Gran Bahia Principe Hotel in St Ann of union busting.
It’s claiming that the hotel has made several positions redundant on the eve of a poll to determine if the union earns the right to represent the employees.
According to the BITU, the poll is now being finalised with the input of the hotel’s management and the labour ministry.
The union has written to the labour ministry complaining about the matter.
The labour minister Pearnel Charles has scheduled a meeting for tomorrow to discuss the issue.
The union is hoping that a date for the representational rights polls will also be settled at the meeting.
However it says a number of employees who have joined the union have been affected by the redundancy.
The BITU is also rejecting claims that the latest action on the part of the hotel is necessary because of low bookings due to the current economic recession.
