JTA mum on latest payment timeline offer
The Jamaica Teacher’s Association, JTA, is remaining tight-lipped on the Government’s latest offer to pay the third installment of outstanding amounts owed to teachers.
Representatives from the JTA and the Ministry of Finance met today at the Labour Ministry to discuss the issue.
The Government had proposed to pay the $8 billon owed to teachers over three years.
The JTA wants the payments to be made over a two-year period.
JTA president Michael Stewart says the government has responded to this request.
He says a meeting of the JTA’s General Council has been scheduled for September 26, after which the outcome of the meeting will be sent in writing to the labour ministry.
Representatives from the JTA and the finance ministry are slated to return to the labour ministry on September 29 to have further discussions on the payment of the teachers’ outstanding salaries.
