Contractor cuts will not affect garbage collection - NSWMA

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) is seeking to assure Jamaica that the restructuring of its operations will not affect garbage collection.

The contracts of 19 contractors to the NSWMA were today terminated in the first phase of the restructuring of the agency.

Another set of contractors will be terminated at the end of the month.

The executive director of the NSWMA Joan Gordon Webley, said the contracts are being ended because of a cut in the agency’s budget.

However Mrs Webley said while she expects a period of readjustment, the restructuring should not affect garbage collection in communities where the contractors are being cut.

In the meantime, the NSWMA head said the agency is now making arrangements to pay over monies owed to some contractors.

Some of the contractors have been protesting against the delay in making the payments.
