More autonomy coming for the Cayman Islands

A new constitution giving the Cayman Islands greater autonomy from Britain will take effect on November 6, 2009.

The territory will also have its first premier, McKeeva Bush, who is currently the Leader of Government Business.

The constitution adds three seats to the 15-member parliament.

It also sets a limit of two consecutive terms for the premier.

Voters in the Cayman Islands approved the change in May, and British officials endorsed it one month later.
