Brown to repay expenses
British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has been ordered to repay more than 12,000 pounds following an independent audit of all Members of Parliament expenses claims since 2004.
Downing Street confirmed that he would repay the money, largely for cleaning and gardening, even though the claims had been within the rules at the time.
It said auditor, Sir Thomas Legg, had deemed that any annual claims above 2,000 pounds for cleaning and 1,000 for gardening should be repaid.
Some MPs are upset that new limits are being applied retroactively.
Former Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, apologized in the House of Commons earlier today after being found to have breached expenses rules following a separate inquiry.
Other parliamentarians have also been asked to repay funds they had claimed as expenses.
