The Guyana parliament has ratified the treaty of the Union of South American Nations, UNASUR.
The move brings the country closer to South American integration.
The union is designed to strengthen political, economic co-operation and dialogue among its member states.
CARICOM countries Guyana and Suriname are part of the grouping.
The parliamentary opposition has questioned Guyana’s involvement in UNASUR.
Foreign Minister Carolyn Rodrigues insists that Georgetown’s participation can help strengthen unity between Latin America and the Caribbean.
