The Department of Corrections is seeking to have a new female juvenile facility established.

Commissioner of Corrections June Spence-Jarrett said the new facility would help the department to meet international standards.

Mrs Spence-Jarrett said there are a number of other projections for 2010 including the formation of an independent inspectorate unit, which will have oversight responsibility and report to the national security minister.

Additionally she said the Correctional Services Department expects to expand the Free FM 89.9 radio station at the Tower Street facility to four other correctional institutions.

The Commissioner of Corrections was speaking today during a press briefing for the official launch of Corrections Week.

The week of activities begins this Sunday with a church service at the Deliverance Evangelistic Center at Waltham Park Road in Kingston.

Other activities include the annual Awards Dinner on October 27 with Prime Minister Bruce Golding as guest speaker, an exhibition at Devon House from October 29 to November 1, sports day at the St Catherine Correctional Sports Club on October 28 and a Debating Competition next Friday at Devon House.
