Grenadian newspaper to be liquidated
The Grenada Today newspaper is to be liquidated, as its owner and editor failed to meet yesterday’s deadline to pay over damages to former Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell.
Last Thursday, Grenada’s Court of Appeal ordered that George Worme compensate Dr Mitchell US$71,000 dollars after it ruled that the newspaper defamed him.
Dr Mitchell sued the paper and Mr. Worme, after the Grenada Today published a letter in 2001 which made derogatory statements about the former Prime Minister.
He said he had no intention of having the newspaper wound up, but was seeking to protect his name.
Dr Mitchell and Mr. Worme have been at odds for years, as he used his newspaper to highlight what he alleges where corrupt activities during the Mitchell administration.
Speaking at a news conference yesterday, Mr. Worme called for greater press freedom in Grenada.
