JTA rejects search policy

Several members of the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) are not supporting the plans by the Education Ministry to empower some teachers to search students.

On Tuesday, the Education Minister, Andrew Holness told members of the JTA that the Ministry was planning to institute a search policy in schools.

He said the policy would authorise some teachers to carry out the searches.

The Secretary General of the JTA, Dr. Adolph Cameron said that teachers agree that there is the need for more security in schools.

However, he said teachers should not be responsible for searches, as they are overwhelmed by the level of violence in schools.
